The Equal Rights Trust (The Trust) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental international human rights organisation which exists to eliminate discrimination and ensure everyone can participate in society on an equality basis. We work in partnership with others around the world to ensure the adoption and implementation of equality laws. The post-holder will play a crucial senior role in our London-based team. The new Head of Operations will be joining the organisation at a key moment in its development. Last year the Trust launched its new five-year strategy and restructured its internal operations to make the Trust more efficient and effective. As part of this process, we have modernised our financial management system and developed and launched new policies and procedures in areas such as risk management and human resources. The new Head of Operations, who reports to the Co-Directors and sits on the Senior Management Team, will be responsible for the oversight and implementation of these policies and the Trust’s operations more broadly. In addition, in the coming year, the Head of Operations will have a particular focus on improving our communications and optimising the operations team to support the programmes team in income generation efforts.

In addition to supporting the Co-directors and the Board of Trustees in growing the organisation, you will also use your leadership skills to oversee the Trust’s financial, human resource and office management. Areas of Responsibility
Strategic and Managerial
- Together with the Co-Directors, act as a member of the Senior Management Team;
- Lead the operations team, including through overseeing and supervising the work of the Finance Manager and Team Administrator, and represent this team at the senior management level;
- Identify and maintain relationships with external sources of operational support where necessary;
- Support the Co-directors and Board of Trustees in the strategic planning for the organisation.
- Support the Co-directors in the financial planning for the organisation;
- Oversee and supervise the work of the Finance Manager;
- Undertake periodic reviews of the Finance Manager’s work, through sampling and reviewing financial information to ensure accuracy and compliance with contractual requirements;
Project Management and Communication support
- Optimise the planning, budgeting, management and reporting on all projects;
- Ensure contractual compliance for grant-funded projects, including by maintaining compliance procedures;
- Support the Team Administrator in the implementation of monitoring and evaluation processes for the Trust’s programmes.
- Improve the Trust’s communication of impact by overseeing a project to improve communication of the outcomes of our monitoring and evaluation.
- Support the Co-directors in the preparation and submission of grant funded applications;
- Supervise the Finance Manager in the development of project budgets;
- Supervise the Team Administrator in the completion of monitoring and evaluation related elements of project proposals and the submission of applications.
Risk Management and Operational Policies
- Oversee the risk management process, including maintenance of the risk register;
- Provide secretarial support to the Audit and Risk Committee of the Board of Trustees;
- Maintain and ensure consistent implementation of the Trust’s operational policies in areas such as due diligence, safeguarding and conflict of interest.
- Maintain and keep updated and legally compliant Staff Handbook with all human resource related policies;
- Take responsibility for personnel files, including ensuring the highest level of confidentiality;
- Oversee the maintenance of records for staff attendance, annual leave etc.
- Maintain our relationships with key stakeholders and service providers;
- Oversee the Team Administrator’s work managing the London office, including the IT infrastructure, contracts and purchasing and maintaining records of internal resource availability.

- At least three years’ experience in a comparative role;
- Line management experience;
- Experience of financial management or of supervising a financial management function;
- Experience of office management;
- Experience of income generation activities, ideally in the area of project funding;
- Superb organisational skills and initiative and a strong sense of responsibility;
- Excellent numerical and IT skills;
- Excellent communication skills for both external and internal communications;
- Self-motivated and comfortable with working autonomously;
- Commitment to equality.
- Experience of centralised management of multiple projects running concurrently, with different donors and contractual requirements;
- Experience of establishing and maintaining project management systems to plan, monitor and manage staff time;
- Experience of the development of an international organisation, including knowledge of key donors and fundraising processes (experience of working on project management of EIDHR and/or US State Department donor contracts a particular plus);
- Oversight and development of charity communications – particularly digital communications
- Strong knowledge of project logic and ability to develop and oversee implementation of excellent logframes, monitoring and evaluation and sustainability approaches;
- Direct, hands-on experience of financial management in a grant-funded organisation;
- Experience in using accounting software, in particular QuickBooks;
- Experience of managing the Human Resources function of a small organisation;
- Knowledge and/or experience of international human rights/equality and development work;
- Language skills, in particular Russian, Arabic and/or Spanish.

£38-45,000 depending on experience (pro rata. Role is for 40-60% FTE)
25 days per year + public holidays (pro rata)
The Trust will also offer a pension contribution of 5% in addition to the annual salary.
