The Equal Rights Trust provided comments on the revised draft General Comment No. 37 on Article 21 ICCPR (right of peaceful assembly). The Trust's focus in the submission and its central recommendation is that the General Comment should fully recognise the relevance of the right to non-discrimination to Article 21, both in framing the nature and scope of the right, and in determining the nature and scope of permissible restrictions.

On 9 July 2019, the European Court of Human Rights found Russia in violation of the right to be free from torture and inhuman treatment (Article 3) and the right to be free from discrimination (Article 14) of the European Convention on Human Rights for failing to address gender-based violence within the state.

Head of Legal and Programmes:
Joanna Whiteman, Co-director of the Equal Rights Trust, has decided to step down from her role at this stage in the Trust’s journey and will be leaving, after seven years, on 31 July 2019. Looking forward, the Board of Trustees has decided to appoint Jim Fitzgerald as sole Director, leading the implementation of our five year strategy.
