Employment Tribunal Finds For Domestic Worker in Important Recognition of Caste Discrimination

On 17 September 2015, in an appalling case of caste discrimination, a UK Employment Tribunal held in Tirkey v Chandok that numerous employment rights of Ms Tirkey, a woman recruited from India to work in the Chandoks’ home, had been violated. The Tribunal found there had been “unacceptable working conditions” of employment and that the Chandoks had directly discriminated against Ms Tirkey because of her ethnic origin and indirectly discriminated against her because of her religion. 

Equal Rights Trust Publishes 15th Equal Rights Review Focusing on Equality in Employment

Today, the Equal Rights Trust published Volume Fifteen of the Equal Rights Review, an interdisciplinary bi-annual journal intended as a forum for the exchange of legal, philosophical, sociological and other ideas and practical insights for those who are promoting equality. This issue contains a special section on equality in employment, as well as an interview on the same issue with Brankica Janković, Commissioner for Protection of Equality for the Serbian Parliament and Chai Feldblum who was appointed by President Obama as Commissioner for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

New Report Launched on How and Why States Must Reform Gender Discriminatory Nationality Laws

Today, a report which focuses on the devastating impact of discriminatory nationality laws in Madagascar and Nepal has been launched by the Equal Rights Trust. It outlines how, in some countries with such laws, women are not able to pass on citizenship to their children and identifies the myriad problems that result from this.

Nationality laws in 27 countries prevent mothers from passing their nationality to their children on an equal basis with fathers. This discrimination results in a range of other significant human rights violations and suffering for individuals and families, contributing to myriad problems, including: statelessness; lack of access to public education, health care and other social services; child marriage; gender-based violence; unemployment and poverty. 

Equal Rights Trust and Partners Launch Rohingya Rights Coalition

Equal Rights Trust Launches First Comprehensive Report on Inequality in Ukraine

On Friday 14 August the Equal Rights Trust launched In the Crosscurrents: Addressing Discrimination and Inequality in Ukraine. The report is the first time an in-depth analysis on discrimination felt by various groups across Ukraine has ever been undertaken, and it assesses how the recent conflict has exacerbated situations for these groups.   

CJEU Ruling Indicates Discrimination by Bulgarian Electricity Company

On 16 July 2015, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) issued a preliminary ruling in a case of alleged discrimination on grounds of ethnicity, referred to it by a Bulgarian court. In a welcome decision, the Court provided important guidance on the application of Directive 2000/43/EC (the Race Equality Directive) to a determination of whether an electricity company’s placing of electricity meters in majority-Roma districts at a height where users could not read them was discrimination. In so doing, the Court made comments which indicate its support for a finding that the practice constitutes direct discrimination.

Bob Hepple Equality Award Celebrates Equal Rights Activists and Advances Support to their Cause

On Thursday 16 July the global equality community united as two equal rights activists Pragna Patel of UK women’s organisation Southall Black Sisters and Mauro Cabral of Global Action for Trans Equality were given the inaugural Bob Hepple Equality Award. 

Historic US Supreme Court Ruling Legalises Same-Sex Marriage across USA

In a 5 – 4 ruling delivered on 26 June 2015, the US Supreme Court determined that the right to marriage equality was protected by the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution. The decision in the case, Obergefell v Hodges, means that same-sex marriage is now legal in all 50 US states.
