Belarus

The Equal Rights Trust works with one of the leading human rights organisation in Belarus, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee (BHC) to strengthen and support civil society efforts to combat discrimination.

Our achievements include:

  • Publishing Half an Hour to Spring: Addressing Discrimination and Inequality in Belarus, the first ever comprehensive assessment of discrimination in the country;
  • Securing the government’s agreement to consider evidence on the need for equality law reform, through advocacy at the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights;
  • Achieving a consensus among civil society on the need for and content of comprehensive equality legislation;
  • Training more than 60 civil society activists on international and national standards in equality law;
  • Establishing a Belarusian Equality Forum and online network to increase cooperation between organisations working on different discrimination issues.
We are currently working with BHC to lobby for the adoption of comprehensive equality law, through engagement at the national and international levels.
