Article 2 of the EC Treaty provides that promotion of equality between men and women is a task of the European Community. Under Article 3(2), the Community should aim to eliminate inequalities and promote equality between men and women. EU legislation on equal treatment follows from three legal bases in the EC Treaty, which are: Article 13(1), which authorizes the European Community to take measures against discrimination on the grounds of "sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation."; Article 137(1)(i), which provides that the European Community can take steps to promote equality between men and women in the labour market and at the work place; and Article 141(3), which relates to the powers of the European Community in relation to "equal treatment of men and women in matters of employment and occupation, including the principle of equal pay for equal work or work of equal value."
