Missed Opportunity for U.S. Supreme Court to Rectify Discriminatory Nationality Law

On 13 June 2011, the Supreme Court of the United States of America failed, in the case of Flores-Villar v United States U.S. 564 (2001), to recognise the discriminatory character of a nationality law that creates an unfair double standard which makes it more difficult for males, and particularly minors, to transmit their U.S. citizenship to their children born abroad and out of wedlock to foreign mothers. 

UN Human Rights Council Adopts First Resolution on LGBTI Rights

On 17 June 2011, the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) narrowly adopted a Resolution expressing grave concern about acts of violence and discrimination against individuals because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. ERT welcomes this Resolution as an important first step by the HRC in the struggle to combat discrimination and violence against LGBTI persons around the world.

ILO Adopts New Protections for Domestic Workers

On 16 June 2011, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) adopted the Convention Concerning Decent Work for Domestic Workers (the Convention) and the Recommendation Concerning Decent Work for Domestic Workers (the Recommendation). The Convention and Recommendation represent an important recognition of the equal employment rights of domestic workers, a group which has been largely omitted from international agreements in the past, who are often not protected by domestic laws from which other workers benefit, and who are, as a result, particularly vulnerable to human rights abuses. 

PACE Committee Approves Report on Declaration of Principles on Equality

On 6 June 2011, the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe approved a report entitled “The Declaration of Principles on Equality and the Activities of the Council of Europe” at its meeting in Oslo.

Nepal Passes New Caste-Based Discrimination Legislation

On 24 May 2011, as reported in a joint press release by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the National Dalit Commission, the Parliament of Nepal passed the Caste-based Discrimination and Untouchability (Crime and Punishment) Act (the Act), two years after the bill was originally placed before it. 

ERT Urges Moldova not to Deregister the Country's Sole Legally Recognised Islamic Group

The Equal Rights Trust (ERT) has written to the Prime Minister of Moldova to express its concern about reports that the Islamic League, the first legally recognised Muslim organisation in Moldova, may be deregistered.
Syria Grants Nationality to Stateless Kurds

The Equal Rights Trust welcomes Syria’s move to grant citizenship to ethnic Kurds who have been stateless for five decades. This is a positive step which if implemented properly will resolve one of the most entrenched cases of statelessness in the world, and allow hundreds of thousands of people to fully enjoy the benefits of citizenship for the first time.

Today, The Equal Rights Trust published Volume Six of The Equal Rights Review (ERR), an interdisciplinary biannual journal intended as a forum for the exchange of legal, philosophical, sociological and other ideas and practical insights for those who are promoting equality. This issue contains a special section on the right to health equality, as well as an interview on the same issue with two of the most prominent experts in health policy (Norman Daniels) and health rights (Paul Hunt).
