In Kazakhstan, our work focuses on combating discrimination on the basis of ethnicity and religion, and promoting the equal enjoyment of the right to freedom of expression.

This involves a range of activities, including:
  • Documenting patterns of discrimination in all of Kazakhstan’s regions and developing the first ever comprehensive report on discrimination and inequality in the country;
  • Establishing a legal assistance scheme to protect journalists arrested for exercising their free expression;
  • Providing training to civil society activists, journalists and bloggers on the relationship between the rights to freedom of expression and non-discrimination;
  • Establishing a forum bringing together civil society organisations to collaborate on initiatives to combat discrimination.
